all my downloads don't seem to work now, mykid was on the computer and he has everything that i download set to open up with windows media..where do i go to change it so everything opens up normally, the icon says , opn or open with...if i open the open with one it asks me select adobe reader, internet explorer ect...which one do i use to go back to normalcy on my computer. thanks.

Hi! Sorry that I didn't drop by sooner. How's your problem coming along? Do you have it corrected yet? It looks like you have discovered that the glorious tale, about all children being great computer experts isn't true! Just because they are young & in school, doesn't mean they know much more about computers, than how to turn it on & start a program or game. They can trash a computer sometimes even faster that a less inquisitive adult. Even more so, because they are curious. But they still don't know what they are looking at. Of course, there are the really smart ones that can muck up somebody's computer 'just because they can' & do it on purpose. Don't know which kind that you have.
Anyway, I'll assume that your computer has Windows XP as your OS. Under your Start, go to your Control Panel. Then Performance & Maintence. On the side bar on the left hand side, see the listing of File Types. Click on this. Then go to the third tab for Files. What you are seeing are, the File Extensions (or endings) listed on the left. On the right are the programs that files with the listed File Extensions will open with, if they are clicked on. Be careful changing stuff in here! As all file types are listed, including Windows internal files. I don't know what files that you have changed on your machine, so I can't tell you what to change to what. But on my computer all my Sims 2 package files have the Icon for the program SimPE (DBPF Package) next to it, because I have SimPE installed. The SIMPE file extension has SIMPE Packed Files. One named SIP has SimPack Arcive next to it. Ones named SIMS2PACK has SIMS2PACK File next to it & SIMS2SKIN has SIMS2SKIN File next to it. I think these are Sims 2 defaults. But if you are also talking about not being about to unzipping your downloaded files. Then those have been changed on your computer too. The file extensions for these should show your unzipping program's icon. All of mine have the icon for my multi-unzipper program IZArc. Anyway, hope you get your computer sorted out again. Keep the kids away from poking around with it. Even better buy them a cheap used machine to muck with. Then lock yours down with a password they don't know & can't guess at. Bye for now. SEJ |
